Monday Updates

Happy Monday all! I’ve been pretty bad at writing posts other than book reviews so I thought it be fun to share some updates.

For starters, I did not finish my pick for book of the month for February, Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman.

I fought really hard to continue reading it, but at the end of the day I was just not having a good time. It’s quite unfortunate really, it was a book that I had really high hopes for.

About a month ago I participated in a program my public library is doing. Basically you fill out a form answering a few questions, and someone on staff puts this “grab bag” together for you with books that they think you will like based on your answers. Dry was one of the books in my grab bag and it was actually the one I was most excited for.

So the book tackles important issues, it is this sort of “worst case scenario” on what could happen if California runs out of water. As someone who lives in California, I was all about this book. Then I actually started reading it and found that the writing was lacking, the characters were not likable and it just didn’t do a good job at presenting the very real world topics without sounding like a pamphlet. So it sadly went into the DNF pile.

After Dry, I started reading The Series of Unfortunate Events: The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket. It is a re-read and it is short enough that I can read it on the side.

I am really enjoying my re-read of this series. Maybe it is too early to say that since The Reptile Room is only book two, but I like that they are on the shorter side and they are very easy reads.

Currently, I am also working my way through the audiobook of “The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Now this is a book that I started on a whim with not really any expectations at all and it genuinely surprised me.

Initially, I wasn’t too into the story because romance is not really something I read. As the story progressed, it really changed my mind. I can’t wait to see where the story is going.

As for reviews… I really am such a big mess. I keep jumping back and forth between reviews, adding a little to one then to another but not really making any significant progress on any one of them. At this point I’ve decided to stick to just one until I finish it.

The review I’m currently working on is for “Woman Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros. Which works out perfectly with International Women’s day right around the corner.

Anyways, that is all. I hope everyone has a fantastic week.

P.S Oh! I also forgot to mention, one of the few booktubers I watch recently started a book club. This month (march 2021) their pick is The Hunger Games. It may be a little ambitious but I’m going to try and squeeze that into my current reads. I’ve always wanted to be part of a book club so I’m excited!
